Referring sites - recommendations from other web pages
Search engines - using search engines to look for key word matchs

3) What was the most popular web browser used to access the site?

54 countries. The top 4 are the USA, Australia, Spain and Ireland.

5) Having clicked every possible link on my analytics, make a few comments on (a) What you can track, (b) What you can track over time and (c) What you can’t track.
U can track virtually everything like languages used, visitor trends, browser operating capabilities, which pages are hit more often and lists of all traffic sources. Over time u can see the how the improvement of these fields are progressing and check for growth of website usage over periods. One thing u cannot track are who has actually been on the page, names ect.

6) What do the following terms mean? These are just a few, you may like to add some more and perhaps include them on the Moodle glossary.

High bounce rate
high bounce rate means the site must be horrible to site visitors and most likely they would
never return again.

key words
Keywords are the words that are used to reveal the internal structure of an author's reasoning

Average Page Depth
The average number of pages on a site that visitors view during a single session.

click through rate

WEEK 3
Digital Design

1. In two paragraphs explain why a customer centric Web site design is so important, yet so difficult to accomplish

"Customer-centric" means creating a Web site that is centered around customer wants and needs. Savvy businesses are realizing that focusing their site on customer benefits and ensuring its visitors a unique experience are key drivers of sales, loyalty, and much-desired word-of-mouth advertising.

Projecting information through that flat panel display that is more or less ubiquitous now, is a complex challenge that involves a wide array of issues that go beyond simply the question of how to design a web site well. But we’re just going to limit our discussion today to – what does it mean to engage and interact with users via a web site, and how to think about what some of the issues are in doing that process well. (http://digitalenterprise.org/transcripts/design_tr.html)

2. Define the term 'presence'. Write an additional paragraph that describes why firms that do business on the Web should be more concerned about presence than firms that operate in the physical world.

Under techological definitions of presence, web presence is the appearance of a person or organization on the World Wide Web.

Firms in which operate only on the web have a much greater value of presence because that is their sole marketing tool. Firms that operate in the physical world however have the back up of being seen on the street ect. howerever experts say that "If you aren't advertising online, by 2011, your business will not just decline, your business will likely be dead. Good luck keeping up with your competitors then... it will be too late." (www.ltseo.com.au/online-presence)

3. Write three paragraphs to briefly describe the things that Real Estate Agents can best accomplish through (1) their web sites (2) Mass media advertising (3) Personal contact

(1) Real Estate Websites designs, services and IDX solutions are the cutting edge of real estate technology. Emphasis is given to very lean search engine friendly code and markup, properly formed URL structure, content accessibility, conversion and high-end graphics and presentation.

(2) Mass media denotes a section of the media specifically designed to reach a large audience. By use of mass media a real estate agents can reach almost a whole community and makes there particular firm seem more successful as it is seen more in the media.

(3) Personal contact keeps a real estate agent in front of there contacts. Personal Advantage allows an agent to work on one relationship at a time - for a more focused, results-driven approach to their marketing. Keeping in touch with their past clients and building relationships with new ones is a great way to gain community support and customer growth.

WEEK 2
Navigating the Web

Part 1 - Navigation
1) Listen to the podcast on Navigation which can be found on the Digital Enterprise Page (Google - the digital enterprise).
a) What are the four (4) main points Michael Rappa makes about search? Please write them on your blog page
a search engine is essentially four things. It’s a database. It’s a collection mechanism for adding data into that database. It’s a search protocol that enables users to query the database. And it’s a ranking algorithm that determines how the results are presented to the user. And when we look at the various search engines that are out there, they vary on one or more of these dimensions. This is what a search engine is all about. (Michael Rappa)

b) Watch or read the Marissa Mayer interview. Write a paragraph or two, on four points made by Marissa Mayer, that you think were the most interesting or significant for business. There are no right or wrong answers here, I just want your opinion.
-social networking is not very popular in the United States, really popular in a couple of other countries like Brazil and India.
-now there’s a trillion URLs out there that they've seen
-A lot of people argue that Yahoo! lost its place because it lost its emphasis on engineering and technology and focused too much on marketing.
-The physical world’s been around a lot longer and so it has gotten more of the bugs and kinks out of it, where as the virtual world has alot of catching up to do.

Part 2 - History of the Internet

1-here
2-near
3-far
4-weird
5-machine to machine
6-server to server

b) Could there be more?
Yes, there are clearly two more that are essentially invisible machine to machine, and server to server known as enterprise computing.
others could be peer to peer and device to device which would be the whole realm of embedded systems.

c) What does this mean for business?
The realm of Enterprise JavaBeans and .NET and all that for businesses to remove friction from the global economy by using weblike and Internet-based things to connect things
All six of these webs essentially become interconnected pools of information that can be hyperlinked, but they are mostly "internetted" and have very different business characteristics. So we had this model, this roadmap, for how we thought this was going to develop a dozen years ago, and we used it to drive the Java strategy." (Bill Joy)
